Business Improvement Zones

A Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) is a non-profit association of business owners in a specific area of Winnipeg. The zones improve economic development in a variety of neighbourhoods, creating a more positive environment for business.

The City works with over 5,000 businesses located throughout 16 Business Improvement Zones. These zones attract businesses of all kinds, creating unique destinations around Winnipeg.

All Business Improvement Zones are unique. Common goals and initiatives of a BIZ include:

  • Area revitalization & beautification projects including lighting and other capital projects
  • Street, sidewalk and boulevard maintenance such as litter cleanup, flower planters & baskets
  • Graffiti removal and facade washing
  • Business grants for safety, storefront improvements & business development
  • Area branding & marketing
  • Hosting events; activating parks & streets
  • Advocating for needs of area businesses to government
  • Business recruitment & economic development initiatives
  • Connections for business, educational workshops & member support
  • Safety & security programs

The Business Improvement Zones Procedures By-law establishes policies and procedures for Business Improvement Zone operation in the City of Winnipeg.
