On May 5, 2024, at approximately 3:20 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the 300 block of Boyd Avenue for the report of family trouble with an intoxicated adult male.

North District General Patrol officers attended and located an agitated, intoxicated male at the rear of the residence engaged in a fight with a family member. As officers separated the parties, the male immediately physically confronted officers as they approached. During the ensuing attempt by officers to gain control of the male, he proceeded to assault officers, including disarming one officer of a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) and biting two of the officers in the upper body, all while repeatedly threatening to kill them. Officers were able to gain control of the male and placed him under arrest; however, three officers sustained injuries during the incident. Two officers attended hospital for their injuries and were released after receiving treatment.

The male, who was experiencing an agitated chaotic event, was transported to hospital, where he required sedation due to the level of intoxication by various substances. He was subsequently medically cleared by hospital staff and processed by officers.

Haidyn Bingley BLACKBIRD, 18, of Winnipeg, is charged with the following offences:

  • Assault Peace Officer x 3
  • Disarming Peace Officer
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

He was detained in custody.
